OISE and University admit failure to comply with Unit 7 CA
On May 15, 2026, your Union concluded a public settlement with UofT and OISE—your Employer. This settlement brings to a resolution the untenable infringement of Unit 7 workers’ rights caused by failure to provide usable membership information to the Union, as required in your Collective Agreement. This is a win for all Unit 7 members yet, once again, evidence of the Employer’s careless attitude towards workers and members across the University.
In order to make sure that Unit 7 members can fully participate in the Union; from attending meetings, to running in Union elections, to accessing hard-won financial assistance funds (e.g. the EHEF), your Collective Agreement requires the Employer to provide accurate, up-to-date payroll information on dues-paying members to the Union. However, from April 2025 to April 2026, OISE and UofT provided inaccurate and unverifiable information about members of the bargaining unit.
OISE and UofT's failure to provide accurate and usable membership data has caused material harm to Unit 7 workers by interfering with their right to engage in Union activities and access equity and hardship funds won through collective bargaining. Some new members were not even aware they were members of CUPE 3902!
The Union repeatedly brought up these concerns to the Employer, but faced with inaction by OISE and UofT, was compelled to bring forward a grievance in September 2025. After seven months of fighting this grievance, the University has agreed to a public settlement conceding wrongdoing and committing to provide accurate and usable information going forward.
The collective power of organized workers at OISE and UofT is what makes the Employer back down in situations like these. To get involved with the Union and organize your coworkers for a better OISE and a better UofT, sign your membership card following the directions at the bottom of our newsletter emails!
