Transitional Year Programme
INSTRUCTORS NEEDED
SOCIOLOGY 101Y
SECTIONS TO BE OFFERED AT TORONTO HIGH SCHOOLS AS
PART OF THE
HSBC STEPS TO UNIVERSITY PROGRAM
The Transitional Year Programme at the University of Toronto requires instructors for sections of SOC 101Y designed for selected secondary school students. These students have been selected by teachers and guidance counselors at a number of Toronto High Schools and by tutors in the Pathways to Education Program in Regent Park as capable to engage in the subject despite socially marginalized situations. A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in either Sociology or Sociology of Education will be an advantage. The successful candidates will have a great deal of teaching experience experience, preferably some experience working with young people from marginalized groups, and strong group communication skills. Since the course is taught in High School during ordinary school hours, the successful candidates must be available during those hours and willing to travel to the school to teach. There will be nine sections to be filled this year in areas ranging from Jamestown through Jane-Finch and into the East end of the former city of Toronto. Specifically, the sections available will be at North Albion Collegiate Institute, George Harvey Collegiate Institute, Western Technical School, Westview Centennial Secondary School, West Toronto Collegiate Institute, Parkdale Collegiate Institute, Emery Collegiate Institute, Monarch Park Collegiate Institute, and the Pathways to Education Program. The instructors for these sections will hold the rank of Sessional Lecturer I or II, and preference will be given to suitable candidates who already have the rank of Sessional Lecturer II. All appointees will be in the bargaining unit represented by CUPE Local 3902, Unit 3, and will be paid at the rate determined by the Collective Agreement for the rank of appointment. Each will have the full responsibility for the section assigned, but will be expected to work in close collaboration with other HSBC Steps to University instructors, and with the TDSB teachers assigned to the program at the various locations. Section enrollment ranges from approximately 20 to 30 students. Interested candidates should send an application, a current curriculum vitae, and the names of two references to Dr. Thomas Mathien, Interim Director, Transitional Year Programme, University of Toronto, 49 St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1A1.
This posting is made in accord with the Collective Agreement in effect between the University of Toronto and CUPE 3902, Unit 3.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: 30 May 2008
