TEACHING AND LEARNING SERVICES, UT SCARBOROUGH EMERGENCY POSTING
Summer 2008
English Language Development Summer Learning Institute Instructor
(Rank: Writing Instructor, CUPE 3902 Unit 3)
Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) at the University of Toronto Scarborough invites applications for at least ONE English Language Development Instructor to teach multiple sections of the English Language Development Summer Learning Institute, for July and August 2008. The position will be for a minimum of 240 hours at $38.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay for Writing Instructor I and $41.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay for Writing Instructor II. Hours will begin on June 1, 2008 and continue to August 31, 2008.
The English Language Development Summer Learning Institute (ELD SLI) is an innovative non-credit course that assists incoming first-year students transition effectively from high school to the academic culture of a research-based university through development of their academic learning skills, motivation as self-directed learners and enhancement of their academic English language proficiency. Conducted in small classes (approximately 25 students), this course is designed to provide incoming students with the opportunity to develop their academic reading, writing, listening and oral presentation skills as well as their grammar to the level expected at university.
The instructor will be responsible for developing new material as well as modifying existing material based on feedback from previous ELD SLI participants. The instructor will be expected to bring in ideas, methods and techniques from his/her discipline, and collaborate in producing course materials for core modules as well as modules that can address discipline-specific needs.
In July and August, the instructor will deliver four ELD SLIs (each consisting of 4 full-day on-campus sessions and online support on off-campus days) which include lectures, classroom activities, mentoring and marking. The instructor will deliver new and established modules on university expectations in oral/written communication, critical thinking, summary and synthesis as well as academic integrity. Since this position requires collaboration for team teaching, and supervision of an ELD peer support team, the instructor will need to provide evidence of strong leadership and competence in carrying out tasks without supervision. The instructor will be responsible for collaborating with the instructional librarian, a Writing Specialist, and the ELD support team and several peer volunteers. The ELD SLI instructor will mark and provide feedback on 15% of the written assignments in the class.
This non-credit course provides students with the opportunity to acculturate to the academic context of a university environment and acquire the tools/skills needed to give them a head start with confident and effective communication at university. Students are generally motivated and committed to their language development.
