CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Job Postings: Writing Instructor for Spring/Summer 2008

The Writing Centre, located within Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, invites applications for one Writing Instructor position.  The UTSC Writing Centre will hire one (1) writing instructor in a new evening tutoring program, hours from 4pm-8pm, from mid-June to August.  The chief duty of instructors at the Writing Centre is to tutor students individually on university writing in all disciplines, especially on response to the assigned topic, use of sources, organization, argumentation, style, and language use.  The writing instructor in this position may be asked to develop pedagogical materials and/or support other Writing Centre summer programming and workshops.

Qualifications:  a completed Master's or PhD degree plus relevant experience teaching writing one-on-one and/or teaching in university courses with a significant writing instruction component; having both kinds of experience would be a strong advantage.  We encourage applicants with skills for teaching one-on-one across the full range of disciplines taught at the University of Toronto Scarborough (including Humanities, Social Sciences, Management, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical and Environmental Sciences).  Experience working with a diverse group of students and training in second-language instruction at the university level is an asset.  The University of Toronto Scarborough Writing Centre favours applicants with a long-term commitment to writing centre teaching.

Hours for this position will start June 9, 2008 to August 5, 2008.  Tutoring will be scheduled between 4pm - 8pm for a minimum of 80 hours of tutoring.  The rate of pay is $38.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay for Writing Instructor I; $41.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay for Writing Instructor II.
