Course Number & Title: ENV 1104H Methods for the Detection of Pathogens

Size of Appointment in Hours (est.): 70 hours

Course Description: The course will focus on biological contaminants in the enviroment such as E.coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidium in public water supplies.  Population pressure combined with a changing climate is increasing the range of Vibrio chlorae world wide, and the expansion of viruses such as West Nile.  The ability to control these serious problems depends on our ability to detect these pathogens and track their movements.  This course will introduce students to the biology of the life history of these organisms, and will educate them in the state of the methods of high sensitivity detection.

Qualifications: M.Sc. Microbiology is required.

Duties: Attending training and weekly organizational meetings with the supervisor.  Preparing laboratory media and equipment for lab exercises.  Recording lab data for group analysis.  Marking of lab note books.  Maintenance of analytical equipment and associated computers.  Lab clean up.  Ordering of supplies, cultures, and culture maintenance.  Lab supervision, student advising.

The position(s) posted above is (are) tentative, pending final course determinations, enrolments and available resources.

All positions include the completion of any grading not completed by December 31, 2007 for F courses and April 30, 2008 for S and Y courses.

Effective September 2007, the following rates apply: SIA $36,17 per hour.

The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 and the University of Toronto.
