Title and number of the course:   GGR 124Y (S) - Urbanization, Contemporary Cities and Urban Life

Course Description:  Introduction to the urban process. From the origin of cities to global urbanization; the evolution of systems of cities; uneven growth and the functional specialization of cities; globalization and economic restructuring, migration, public policies. World cities, dynamics of urban property markets, population and demography, job location, housing, mobility and neighborhood change, social structure and spatial inequalities. Planning, politics and policy issues in U.S. and Canadian cities.

Estimate of the course enrolment:  180              

Estimate of TA Support:  140 (total hours)

Class Schedule: Wednesday, 2:00 – 4:00 pm

Sessional dates of appointment:  January 1 – * April 30, 2008

*Please note that exams will be held in April/May and the position includes the completion of any course grading not finished by April 30, 2008. 

Salary:  Half Course: Sessional Lecturer (SL) I = $6,275; SL II = 6,775

Qualifications:  PhD in Geography; Previous teaching experience with large classes at the University level, prefer previous teaching experience in GGR124Y1Y. Must have previous teaching experience in the Department of Geography, UofT.

Brief description of duties:  Lectures on urbanization process, bases of urban growth, internal structure, growth and living environments of contemporary cities; assignment, test, and exam preparation; grading.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement. Preference in hiring is given to qualified persons who have been advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II by the Department of Geography.

Please note that graduate students who are currently registered in a PhD program at the University of Toronto are members of CUPE3902 Unit 1 and are not eligible to apply for this position.
