COURSE NAME: Society in Transition

BASIC DUTIES: All duties associated with teaching an undergraduate course, including the supervision of any assigned TA support, and the completion of any course work and grading not completed by December 31, 2007

General Course Description: Beginning with an exploration of the kind of conceptual tools we might use to grapple with what has been called reflexive modernity, the course moves towards a focus on a particular pattern: the articulated web of global and local networks that produce simultaneously inequalities and alienation and yet potentially new identities and collectivities. The course requires a high degree of class interaction and independent research.

Prerequisite: ANT 204Y, at least one area course in anthropology.

Dates of Appointments: September 1 to December 31, 2007

Class Schedule: Mondays 10-12 pm, September 10 to December 7, 2007

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology (social cultural area)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching

COURSE NAME: Living Primate Adaptations

Estimated ENROLMENT: 60

BASIC DUTIES: All duties associated with teaching an undergraduate course, including the supervision of any assigned TA support, and the completion of any course work and grading not completed by April 30, 2008.

General Course Description: This course consists of a survey of living primates and a review of the evolutionary history of the Order Primates. The course describes the behavioural and anatomical adaptations that are characteristic to this order of mammals, and examines the fossil record of this group for the last 60 million years. This lab-oriented course compares the anatomy and adaptations of modern primates with the abundant and diverse primate skeletal material preserved in the fossil record. The understanding of the biological diversity and the evolutionary history of primates is important for further understanding of human adaptations and evolution.

Prerequisite: ANT 203Y

Estimate of TA Support: 1.5 positions (420 hours)

Dates of Appointments: September 1, 2007 to April 30, 2008

Class Schedule: Tuesdays 12-2, classes begin Sept 10 and end April 11

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology
  • Experience teaching Biological Anthropology
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching

Salary: $12,550 for Sessional Lecturer I and $13,550 for Sessional Lecturer II.

General Course Description: Comparative examination of human ecological adaptations, livelihood strategies, spiritual and cultural values and their relation to environmental maintenance or degradation. Explores contemporary "grass roots" environmental movements and ideologies.

Prerequisite: ANT 204Y and one 300 + level course in Social-Cultural Anthropology.
