Course Number & Title: AEC3131H S3 Special Topics: Popular Education: Comparative and International Perspectives

Estimated Enrolment: 20 maximum

Qualifications: Preferred candidates will have:

  1. A doctorate degree in education.
  2. Experience teaching in both graduate and community settings.
  3. Extensive experience in popular education as a field of practice including international contexts.
  4. Academic, professional and/or popular publications in the field of adult and popular education.

Duties: Instructors are required to:

  1. Teach 12 sessions of 36 hours.
  2. Prepare teaching resources for each class and provide relevant materials; be prepared to create the on-line environment for teaching this course.
  3. Assess and evaluate students' work and provide a final course grade according to OISE/UT grading practices (this course is pass/fail).

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course explores the theory and practice of popular education in different parts of the world (Latin America, Africa, Asia, North America), drawing examples from different popular movements including human rights, citizenship learning, participatory democracy, and struggles for self determination, workers rights, union mobilization, and international solidarity. It will highlight the works of Paulo Freire and his far ranging influence through pedagogical strategies such as popular theatre, participatory budgeting, and other forms of critical culture engagement.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The purposes of this course are fourfold: (1) to explore different consulting styles; (2) to explore the stages of the consulting process; (3) to explore the models of consulting stages; (4) to emphasize the practice of consulting skills in simulated consulting situations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course is a study of theory, research, and experience based on a view of organizations as contexts for learning and as learning systems. The course will employ a variety of learning strategies including participant and instructor presentation, organizational simulation and experiential learning, guest speakers, and field study. Students will gain an appreciation of approaches to the integration of work and learning for continuous development, the assumptions upon which action learning is built, and the centrality of developing their own critical reflection skills as agents for change.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will offer an introduction to recent international theories in the field of adult literacy that are known variously as social practice theories, socio-cultural theories, or "The New Literacy Studies." This approach shifts attention away from literacy as an isolated set of "skills" and encourages us to look instead at relationships, going beyond texts themselves to what people do with written texts, with whom, where, and how. It recognises difference and diversity and challenges us to consider how these differences are valued within our societies. It invites us to explore not only educational settings but informal learning, and the many other settings in which literacies play a key role. The course will explore the implications of this theoretical tradition of literacy practice, research and policy. No pre-requisite, but previous experience in the field of adult literacy will be an asset.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course has both on-line and field components for the term January-April, 2007. It provides an opportunity to enhance professional skills and knowledge in the use of action research methodologies to enable organizational learning and change. Students and instructor identify learning objectives, select field sites for practicum placements, and design learning activities to achieve the objectives. A seminar, on-line, is used to provide peer support and content input related to students' practicum projects. Note: This course is recommended for students with some experience/exposure to organization development theory and practice, and is therefore best taken towards the end of the degree program.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will offer a critical analysis of the place of power in sustaining inequalities in the workplace. It will look at the sources of power, its reproduction and persistence. The course will consider a variety of ways in which power is exercised in the workplace. Power will be examined as a multidimensional phenomenon including class, gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity. We will look at the ways in which the unequal distribution of power works to advantage or disadvantage certain groups of people. The course also will seek alternative approaches aimed at the establishment of an equitable workplace.

The course will provide information, perspectives and frameworks within which critical issues facing the nonprofit and public sector can be understood. It will examine the organizational forms and accountability structures of organizations with a social purpose, as well as discuss the challenges faced by those within these organizations. The formal and informal practices of teaching and learning within nonprofit and public sector organizations will also be explored.
