The African Studies Program seeks a sessional lecturer from September 1, 2007 – April 30, 2008* to teach the following course:
NEW380Y1Y – INTERMEDIATE SWAHILI
NEW380Y1Y – Grammar and syntax. Conversation and written composition. Reading of texts: literary, journalistic. Relation of the language to its East African context.
Enrolment Estimate: 30 students
Estimated TA Support: None
Class Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Wetmore Hall, room 51A
Salary: $12,550 (Sessional Lecturer I) - $13,550 (Sessional Lecturer II)
*Please note that the position includes the completion of any course grading not finished by April 30.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a completed or nearly completed Ph.D. (or equivalent) with a scholarly background in areas related to the specific course. Teaching experience preferred.
Note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.

NEW150Y1Y – A multi-disciplinary study of Africa, emphasizing inquiry and critical analysis. Pre-colonial, colonial and contemporary African history, anthropology, politics, African humanism and society, religion, art, music, race, resistance, gender and Pan-Africanism.

This course explores the issues that engage the attention of ordinary Africans, ranging from the dramatic to the seemingly trivial but quotidian concerns that occupy our lives.

NEW252Y1Y – The exploration of a range of African cosmologies, epistemologies, and theologies, as well as specific case studies on justice, the moral order, and gender relations. The influence of these richly diverse traditions is traced as well in the writings of African thinkers in the diaspora.

NEW322Y1Y – Novels written in the last forty years by English, French and Portuguese-speaking Africans. Ideological views concerning colonialism and neo-colonialism. Tradition, religious and secular; the use of African symbolism. A small number of historical and sociological texts are recommended as essential background reading. Works not written in English are read in translation.
