ARTS MANAGEMENT/HUMANITIES

The following position(s) for a Sessional Lecturer is (are) available in the Department of Humanities, Visual & Performing Arts-Arts Management, for the Fall/Winter 2007-08 academic sessions. This is a regular posting in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 (Unit 3). In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department's Applicant Pool: all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department since September 1, 2005 and all persons who have submitted an application within the past twelve months. All pool members who wish to be considered for a particular position must submit an application (form attached) and updated curriculum vitae to Professor William R. Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the Sessional Lecturer I rate of pay will be $6,275 for a half course (Y, F or S) inclusive of vacation pay. The Sessional Lecturer II rate of pay will be $6,775 for a half course (Y, F or S) inclusive of vacation pay.

Appointment Dates: F courses: September 1 - December 31, 2007; S courses: January 1 - April 30, 2008

Sessional Dates (including exam periods): F courses: September 10 - December 21, 2007; S courses: January 7 - May 2, 2008

Note: all positions involve completion of any course grading not finished by December 31, 2007 for F courses; April 30, 2008 for S courses.

Course Number/Title/Description: HUMB11H3, Critical Thinking, Reasoning and Decision-Making

An introduction to locating, evaluating, and analyzing information, and using that knowledge to construct and organize effective arguments and make practical decisions. As the emphasis is the application of critical thinking principles, this course and its materials will be relevant to a wide range of academic, professional, and other contexts. [This course is offered jointly by the Arts Management, Humanities Co-op and Journalism Programs].

Time: Fall WE 9-11; Winter WE 9-11

Estimated Enrolment: Fall: 80; Winter: 75

Estimated TA Hours: Fall: Up to 150 hrs (3 tutorials); Winter: Up to 150 hrs (3 tutorials)

Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments and final portfolios; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours.

Qualifications: Teaching experience (or equivalent) and expertise in the field required; advanced university degree and experience working within the cultural sector (journalism, publishing, arts management, or a related field).

Course Number/Title/Description: VPAA06H3S, Visual and Performing Arts Management in the Digital Age

An introduction to the use of computers in the management of visual and performing arts. Demonstrations, workshops and an introductory survey of applications and usage will illustrate current standards and consider future possibilities of the handling of information (including text, numbers, images and sound). Projects will allow opportunities for practical experience.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPAB13H3F, Financial Management for Arts Managers

An introduction to financial management issues faced by arts and cultural managers. The topics include an introduction to basic accounting concepts, financial statement preparation and analysis, internal control and managment information systems, budgeting and programming, cash and resource management, and various tax-related issues.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPAB14H3S, Fundraising and Resource Development in the Arts and Cultural Sector

This course provides an overview of practical skills and knowledge required by arts managers in the area of raising and developing required resources. Topics will include donor and sponsor development, grant writing, direct mail requests, and the integration of fundraising with marketing, planning, and human resource development.

This course provides a broad foundation of project management and planning knowledge and skills. Topics such as project and special event management (including tours, festivals, etc.), and strategic and business planning (including entrepreneurship) will be discussed in the context of organizational processes.
