Position: Sessional Lecturer I/II
Course title and code: MIE345H1 F: Case Studies in Ergonomics
Course description: A detailed analysis will be made of several cases in which human factors methods have been applied to improve the efficiency with which human-machine systems operate. Examples will be chosen both from the area of basic ergonomics and from high technology. Emphasis will be placed on the practical use of material learned in earlier human factors courses.
Estimated Enrolment: Approximately 50-60
Estimated TA support: 3 hours per week (tentative)
Class schedule:
Lectures: 3 hours/week; timetable to be determined.
Tutorial: 2 hours/week; timetable to be determined.
Sessional date of appointment: Fall session, September - December, 2007.
Salary: Minimum level of pay is $6,275 (Sessional Lecturer I) and $6,775 (Sessional Lecturer II), and may increase depending on applicant's level of experience and suitability for the position.
Qualifications: A university graduate degree in engineering. Substantial teaching experience to engineering students in a university setting would be a strong asset. Professional experience with ergonomic analysis in a wide variety of cases would be a strong asset.

Brief description of duties: Full responsibility for designing and delivering lectures, in accordance with the posted course description. Direction of Teaching Assistants, and ultimate responsibility for tutorials. Setting of all tests, examination, and other methods of student evaluation as appropriate. Available to students through regular office hours. Ultimate responsibility for submission of final grades to the Registrar's Office. Grading of final examinations, and ultimate responsibility for the grading of all other means of student evaluation.
Note: This course may be taught by one individual, or by a team of two individuals sharing the responsibilities.

Course title and code: MIE374H1 S: Economic Analysis and Decision Making
Course description: Economic Evaluation and justification of engineering projects and investment proposals. Cost estimation, financial and cost accounting; depreciation; inflation; equity, bond, and loan financing; after tax cash flow; measures of economic merit in the private and public sectors; sensitivity and risk analysis; single and multiple-attribute decisions. Introduction to micro-economics. Applications: retirement and replacement analysis; make-buy and buy-lease decisions; economic life of assets; capital budgeting; selection from alternative engineering proposals; production planning; investment selection.

Estimated TA support: 16 hours per week (tentative)

Lectures: 3 hours/week for each Section; timetable to be determined.
Tutorial: 1 hour/week for each Section; timetable to be determined.

Course title and code: MIE449H1 S: Human Computer Interface Design for Complex Systems
Course description: This course will focus primarily, but not exclusively, on how to design computer-based interfaces for complex human-machine systems, such as power plants. An ecological approach will be adopted, pointing to the importance of understanding the structure of the work environment and then trying to present that information in a way that takes advantage of the human perceptual systems. Various design techniques for enhancing the informativeness of interfaces will be discussed within the context of several design applications.
