Transitional Year Progam - regular posting (closing Jun.30/07)
INSTRUCTORSHIPS AVAILABLE AT
TRANSITIONAL YEAR PROGRAMME 2007-8
The Transitional Year Programme seeks to make two appointments of the level of Sessional Instructor I for the period of 1 September 2007 to 30 April 2008. They are listed below.
- Course Instructor: TYP 015H1S (Reasoning in the Sciences)
This course examines the historical significance of scientific reasoning and processes and procedures of scientific investigations. Selected problems from the Physical, Life and Social Sciences are used to demonstrate the scientific way of knowing and its relationship with everyday life. This course is intended to be compulsory, basic introduction to general science for students engaged in a university access program. The students take the course with highly variable levels of scientific culture. Some may have little familiarity even with popular scientific culture, and some resist the study of science on cultural, ethical or religious grounds. This course is offered during an unusual time period: from early November to early March, to accomodate other elements of the TYP academic program.
- Instructor, Academic Support Seminar for TYP students in BOT 202Y1Y (Plants and Society).
This seminar provides an opportunity for TYP students who have chosen BOT 202Y1Y as their option course to review course material, discuss it with the aim of comprehension and recall, develop study skills applicable in the sciences and learn techniques for taking multiple choice exams. The instructor will work with a small group of students (8-10) and will have no grading responsibilities, although the development of appropriate practice exercises will be required.
A graduate level degree, or degrees, in a science and/or in science education is required for this position. Familiarity with the requirements of adults returning to school, whose education was interrupted due to social, economic, health or personal circumstances, or for reasons of disability is essential. Previous experience teaching science to members of an educationally marginalized community is an asset. The salary for the first position is CUPE 3902 Unit 3 scale for a one-semester instructorship at the level of Sessional Instructor I as of 1 September 2007 ($6,275), that for the second position is at the level for a full-course appointment at that level ($12,550). Applicants should specify which position(s) they are applying for. Applications must be received at TYP by Wednesday 30 May 2007. They should include a CV, a letter of application, and the names of two referees. They should be directed to Thomas Mathien, Interim Director, Transitional Year Programme, University of Toronto, 49 St. George Street, Toronto, ON, M5S 2E5. Electronic application materials should be sent to thomas.mathien@utoronto.ca
