The following position(s) for a Sessional Lecturer is (are) available in the Department of Humanities, Visual & Performing Arts, Art History discipline for the Fall/Winter 2007-08 academic session. This is a regular posting in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 (Unit 3). In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department's Applicant Pool: all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department since September 1, 2005 and all persons who have submitted an application within the past twelve months. Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the Sessional Lecturer I rate of pay will be $6,275 for a half course (Y, F or S) inclusive of vacation pay. The Sessional Lecturer II rate of pay will be $6,775 for a half course (Y, F or S) inclusive of vacation pay.
Appointment Dates: F courses: September 1 - December 31, 2007; S courses: January 1 - April 30, 2008
Sessional Dates (including exam periods): F courses: September 10 - December 21, 2007; S courses: January 7 - May 2, 2008
Note: all positions involve completion of any course grading not finished by December 31, 2007 for F courses; April 30, 2008 for S courses.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPHA46H3F, Ways of Seeing: Introduction to Art Histories
How and why are objects defined as Art? How do these definitions vary across cultures and time periods? Studying different approaches to writing art history and considering a wide range of media from photography to printmaking and installation arts.

Estimated T.A. Hours: Up to 100 hours (2 tutorials)
Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments and final portfolios; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours.
Qualifications: PhD, with knowledge in the area required, strong academic record and professional promise; ongoing research and publication in the field; university teaching experience.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPHB41H3S, The Human Figure in Greek Art (8th-4th Centuries B.C.)
A study of the representations of men and women in sculpture and vase painting, two of the richest media in Greek art. This study reveals narratives of myth and legend, reflections of everyday life in Greece, and social values such as the perception of gender.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPHB66H3F, Representing Religions: The Rise of States, World Religions, and Art Patronage
This course will investigate the strength of the visual in practices of worship and arts patronage. It focuses attention upon the role of the sacred in understanding of arts in diverse cultural contexts and across time and will also question the role of the profane and the secular in art history.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPHB67H3F, Buddhist Art and Cultures
This course will serve as an introduction to the field of Buddhist art historiography, with an emphasis on the relationships between visual arts, Buddhist philosophy and religion, and the cultural manifestations of the faith and its arts across the world. The classes will take advantage of collections at the ROM.

Course Number/Title/Description: VPHC53H3S, The Silk Routes
The Silk Routes were a lacing of highways connecting Central, South and East Asia and Europe. Utilizing the Royal Ontario Museum's collections, classes held at the Museum and U of T Scarborough will focus on the art produced along the Silk Routes in 7th to 9th century Afghanistan, India, China and the Taklamakhan regions.

Art criticism as a complex set of practices performed not only by critics, art historians, curators and the like, but also by artists (and collectors). The traditional role of art critics in the shaping of an art world, and the parallel roles played by other forms of writing about art and culture (from anthropology, sociology, film studies).
