Course Number & Title: AEC1214H Critical Multicultural Practice: Diversity Issues in Counselling

Estimated Enrolment: 25 maximum

TA Support: None

Class Schedule: Tuesday evenings 5-8pm.

First Class: Sept. 11

Last Class: Nov. 27

Qualifications: Preferred candidates will have:

  1. Doctorate degree in Counselling, Clinical Psychology.
  2. Registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario with counselling competence
  3. Graduate teaching experience
  4. Expertise in multicultural counselling therapy and interventions, including counselling psychology supervision

Duties: Instructors are required to:

  1. teach minimum of 36 hour course (12 three-hour sessions)
  2. prepare teaching resources for each class and provide relevant materials
  3. assess and evaluate students' work and provide final course grade according to OISE/UT grading practices
  4. be available for informal meetings/communications with students as necessary

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course is designed to introduce students to the field of counselling in the context of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-faith, multi-racial, multi-gendered, and multi-abled society. The course seeks to define and locate multicultural counselling studies within the broader historical, economic, social and political contexts of mental health care. Through a critical examination of "race", gender, ethnicity, sexual orientations, disability and social class students would establish an understanding of theoretical and conceptual ideas that form the basis of practice with minority clients.
