Subject to budgetary approval and staffing considerations, the Department for the Study of Religion, University of Toront invites applications from individuals interested in teaching the following courses during the 2007-2008 academic year. Applicants should submit:
- a current curriculum vitae,
- an outline of the course, method of evaluation, and required textbook(s),
- evidence of teaching ability (e.g., summarized course evaluations, letters of reference, etc.) and

An introduction to the Buddhist, Christian, Confucian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Shinto, Sikh, Taoist, and Zoroastrian Traditions. The historical development and principle beliefs, practices, and institutions of each will be examined. Materials include selected primary sources in translation.

Qualifications:
- Completed PhD in Religion with significant graduate work and/or ongoing academic development in the field of world religions, comparative religion, and/or phenomenology of religion;
- teaching and/or TA experience in RLG 100Y1Y/280Y1y or equivalent courses.

RLG200Y1Y Phenomenon of Religion Tuesday 6-8pm
Theories about the variety and nature of religious experience, personal and collective, including historiographic, psychological, sociological, anthropological, philosophical analyses of religion. How religious life is expressed in such forms as myth, narrative and ritual, systems of belief and value, morality and social institutions.

A survey of various psychological approaches to aspects of religion such as religious experience, doctrine, myth and symbols, ethics and human transformation. Attention will be given to phenomenological, psychoanalytic, Jungian, existentialist, and feminist approaches.

An introduction to Tibetan for beginners. An overview of basic grammar and development of vocabulary, with readings of simple texts.

The system and interaction between religious and ethical norms, social and political ideals, and systems of law. The course concerns the ongoing dialectic between religious and other values, the application of religious ideas to social orders, and questions of religious and human rights.

The religious and cultural roots of antisemitism and its manifestations in Western civilization: anti-Jewish aspects of pagan antiquity, the adversus Judaeos tradition in classical Christian theology; racist antisemitism in Europe (the Aryan myth); the rise of political antisemitism; the Nazi phenomenon, antisemitism in Canada and the United States.

Readings in Vedic, Pauranic, Tantric and folk myths; traditional Hindu understandings of myth; recent theories of interpretation, e.g. those of Levi-Strauss, Eliade, Ricoeur, applied to Hindu myths
