The following Sessional Lecturer positions are available in the Department of English and Drama at the University of Toronto Mississauga for the 2007-2008 Fall/Winter session. This is a regular posting in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Governing Council of the University of Toronto and CUPE 3902 (Unit 3). As required by the agreement, this posting is being emailed to all those in the Department’s Applicant Pool, which consists of all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the UTM Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department since 1 September 2004 and anyone who has submitted an application and CV within the past twelve months. Applications from others are also welcome. Anyone wishing to be considered for a particular position must submit the attached Application Form as well as a current CV. Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the Sessional Lecturer I rate of pay will be $12,550.00 for a Full (Y) course and $6275.00 for a Half (F/S) course. The Sessional Lecturer II rate of pay will be $13550.00 for a Full (Y) course and $6775.00 for a Half (F/S) course. All pay rates are inclusive of vacation pay.

Sessional Dates (including Exam periods): 1 Sept. 2007 – 30 Apr. 2008 for Y courses; 1 Sept. – 31 Dec. 2007 for F courses; 1 Jan. – 30 Apr 2008 for S courses.

Note: Sessional positions involve completion of any course grading remaining incomplete at the end of the academic session.

Course Number/Title/Description: ENG340H5F: Modern Drama to WW II

A study of plays in English by such dramatists as Wilde, Yeats, Shaw, Synge, Glaspell, Hughes, and O'Neill, as well as plays in translation by such dramatists as Ibsen, Chekhov, Strindberg, and Pirandello.

Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, admin. and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs assigned to course.

Qualifications: PhD preferred, in English or Drama with specialization in modern drama; strong academic record and professional promise.

Course Number/Title/Description: ENG341H5S: Modern Drama since WW II

A study of plays by such dramatists as Beckett, Miller, Williams, Pinter, Soyinka, and Churchill, with background readings from other dramatic literatures.

Course Number/Title/Description: DRE220H5F: History of Performance

An introduction to the techniques used in the study of theatre history, through an examination of the production histories of selected dramatic texts. Texts will be drawn from the classical, medieval and early modern Western European traditions. May include a research performance component.

Course Number/Title/Description: DRE222H5S: Performance Text

An introduction to the techniques of dramaturgical analysis, through the study of selected dramatic texts as scripts for performance. Examples will emphasize modern and contemporary drama, as well as a range of styles, and will include one or more Theatre Erindale productions; other productions may also be included. Includes a practical workshop component. Objectives of the course include: introducing a full range of texts to which students might be exposed as theatre practitioners or audience members; focusing on the relationship between the performance event and its associated written text; introducing the definition of dramaturgy and the possible roles of the dramaturge; introducing the different ways of writing about performance, such as journal entries, reviews, and historical and formal/theoretical research.

Course Number/Title/Description: DRE360H5S: Developmental Dramaturgy

A theoretical, historical, and practical study of the process of developmental dramaturgy. The course will include a survey and analysis of historical and contemporary interpretations of the role of dramaturgy in the creation of new work. Students will also participate in the practical application of dramaturgical strategies and techniques.
