Woodsworth College - regular posting (closing Apr.13/07)

JOB POSTING - SESSIONAL LECTURER

Posting Date: March 8, 2007

Course Code/Title: HUM199Y The Force Is With Us: A Consideration of Culture and Film

Course Description: The impact that a simple movie may have upon us is easily underestimated. Movies can influence our feelings, values, beliefs, and ideas; in short, they can have a fundamental effect upon our understanding of ourselves and our world. Movies often directly or indirectly address questions of meaning, and implicitly or explicitly comment upon how we should live. This is just as true (if not more true) for popular movies as it is for movies that are considered more serious or artistic. This course will consider these issues by examining a variety of topics (violence, redemption, love, death), critical approaches (postcolonial, feminist, psychological, theological, semiotic), and types of film (comedy, science fiction, horror, camp, teen farce).

First year seminar, open to newly admitted students. This is a jointly offered course and details will be worked out between the two instructors.

Estimated Enrolment: 24 students

Estimated TA support: none

Class Schedule: Friday 2-4

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2007 to April 30, 2008. Please note that the position includes the completion of any course work and grading not completed by April 30, 2008.

Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $12,550 including vacation pay, Sessional Lecturer II - $13,550

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in a related field, will have teaching experience at the University level, and have proven success in academic skills development.

Duties: The instructor in this jointly taught seminar will not only introduce the subject matter but also methodological and critical approaches. S/he will also include skills development activities as appropriate.

Closing date: April 13, 2007

Application Procedure: All individuals interested in this position must submit a Curriculum Vitae and the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 application form to m.oneill.karch@utoronto.ca

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the Unit 1 Collective Agreement rather than the Unit 3 Collective Agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
