Course Description: Picasso’s introduction of everyday material into the domain of painting has far reaching implications that condition a reading of modernism. This seminar examines collage from its earliest modern impulses to its contemporary manifestations. While focused on major chapters in the evolution and exploration of collage as technique and medium (Picasso, Duchamp, Matisse, Rauschenberg, Johns, Stella, Stockholder, Sachs, Gallagher, Amer, et. al.), the seminar will encourage investigation into less mainstream expressions of collage concepts. Additionally, the impact of collage upon a plurality of media such as film, architecture, music and literature will be addressed.
