Job Postings: Sessional Lecturer

UNI 200 - 2 positions

(First semester) Introduction to Research Methods

This one-semester course will offer students a basic understanding of research design and data collection from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, with an emphasis on examples from (and application to) health-related problems and health policy. Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Health Studies Program.

Pre- or co-requisite: none

Estimated Course Enrollment: 30 students

Estimated Teaching Assistant Support: 50 hours grading assistance

Class Schedule: Two-hour meeting once a week, time to be established

Dates of Appointment: September 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005

This position includes the completion of any grading not completed by December 31, 2005

Salary: $ 5,750

(Second semester) Introduction to Social Statistics

This course will offer students a basic understanding of social statistics, including data analysis and interpretation, with an emphasis on examples from (and application to) health-related problems and health policy.

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Health Studies Program.

Estimated Teaching Assistant Support: 50 hours grading assistance

Salary: $ 5,750

Qualifications: At least a Master’s degree in social or public health science is required; a PhD degree is preferred. The candidate will have had experience doing health research and ideally, will have had experience teaching undergraduates.

Description of Duties: Preparing and delivering lectures, and leading class discussions of the lectures and readings. Supervising tests and exams.

UNI 373H - Population Health – This issue-oriented course will extend students’ understanding of the broad definitions of health and its determinants, and population-based strategies of health promotion in Canada. Topics include: variations in health status as affected by population patterns, class, gender, ethnicity; employment and mortality, and family composition; the major causes of morbidity and mortality; the concept of community healthy, and the opportunities and constraints facing public policy. Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Health Studies Program.

UNI 400 – Practicum in Health Studies – The instructor will oversee individual field placements with health research or administration professionals, in which students apply theory and skills to specific projects. These placements culminate in oral and written reports in the second term. In the first term, the instructor will organize weekly meetings to discuss readings about health research and will discuss on-going projects with invited health researchers Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Health Studies Program.

UNI 446H – Health Care – A course that focuses on the organizational and managerial issues associated with health research and health care delivery, using real-life examples to illustrate key theoretical points. Topics covered will include an overview of the health professions and occupations, cultural dimensions of illness, health and healthcare (including cross-cultural communication), and the management of competing health priorities in modern health organizations.

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Health Studies Program.

UNI 464H – International Health – A course intended to widen the horizons of future health researchers through international and intercultural learning, and to provide tools for understanding different ways of approaching issues and problems related to health, health care, and health research management. The course will include a comparative examination of health research and health systems in selected societies.
