Engineering Communication Program - emergency posting
The Engineering Communication Program invites applications for sessional lecturers to teach the following courses in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. These eight-month positions will commence September 2005. The following courses will require instructors:
·APS 111/112 Engineering Strategies and Practice (five sections)
·ESC 101: Engineering Science Praxis I (five sections)
·APS 280S: Engineering Writing (one or two sections)
·MSE 290Y/390Y: Communication I and II (two sections)
Each of these courses listed is considered a ½ course teaching load. The responsibilities within the courses vary as some are team-taught courses.
·ECE 298F/299S: Communication and Design I and II (four sections)
Each of these courses is considered a ¼ course teaching load and primarily involves leading small group tutorials as part of a large teaching team.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team to develop and support an integrated communication program for the undergraduate engineering student population. The main duties of sessional lecturers include teaching courses or parts of courses where written or oral communication is a major component, teaching small group workshops within engineering courses, teaching workshops, and tutoring students on engineering writing, especially issues of organization, logic, style, and language use.
In addition, work may involve teaching specific courses or modules on any of the following depending on the particular skills of the candidate: technical communication, communication and design, oral communication, human factors, project management, thesis writing and professional writing.
The Engineering Communication Program encourages applications from those with relevant experience teaching writing in university courses and working with engineers. Qualified applicants will possess at least a Master’s degree in a field of Technical Communication or related area such as (but not limited to) Rhetoric, Second Language Education, Applied Linguistics, Professional Communication, or English. Other valuable assets include the ability to work in team-teaching contexts, experience working with engineers and experience tutoring one-to-one or teaching Second Language at the university level.
The contracts would ordinarily involve a teaching load between two and six courses. All positions positions are subject to budgetary approval. The current starting rate of pay for Sessional Lecturers (SL1) is $5750 per course plus vacation pay.
