Course Number and Title: MAT138Y5Y Calculus

Course Description: Derivatives, integrals, the fundamental theorem of calculus, improper integrals and limits, a brief introduction to sequences and series. Differential and integral calculus of several variables: partial differentiation, chain rule, extremal problems, Lagrange multipliers, classification of critical points. Multiple integrals, Green's theorem and related topics. This course is faster paced than the MAT135Y5/232H5 sequence. [78L, 26T, 13P] Exclusion: MAT132Y5, 133Y5, 134Y5, 135Y5, 232H5

Estimated Enrolment: 150

Estimated TA support: 400 hours

Class Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays – Time to be announced

Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 2005 – April 2006 (work may extend into May 2006)

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I, the rate of pay for a full course (1.0 FCE) will be 11, 500, inclusive of vacation pay, and for a half course (0.5 FCE) will be $5,750, inclusive of vacation pay.

Qualifications: -Ph.D in Mathematics -strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills -demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching preferred -previous experience teaching MAT138Y highly desirable

Duties:

The instructor is responsible for all aspects of delivering the course, including: -planning the lectures, tutorials, assignments and tests and marking schemes -delivering the lectures -providing appropriate contact time outside of class to students, through offices hours, email, etc. -invigilating the final exam -managing the grades and submitting the final course grades -dealing with student petitions, setting and grading a make-up exam if required
