Sessional Lecturer Position, Winter Term 2006
The Caribbean Studies Program seeks a sessional lecturer from January 1 – April 30, 2006* to teach the following course:
NEW325H1S – CARIBBEAN WOMEN THINKERS
NEW325H1S – An examination of the historical and political significance of writings (literary, political, scholarly) by Caribbean women who engage problems within Caribbean culture and provide insights into the endeavours of the peoples of the region.
Enrolment Estimate: 56 students
Estimated TA Support: None
Class Schedule: Wednesdays 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Wilson Hall, room 523
Salary: $5,575 (Sessional Lecturer I) - $6,250 (Sessional Lecturer II)
*Please note the position includes the completion of any course grading not finished by April 30.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a completed or nearly completed Ph.D. (or equivalent) with a scholarly background in areas related to the specific course. Teaching experience preferred.
Note: Graduate Students who are currently registered in a Ph.D. Program at the University of Toronto are members of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 and are not eligible to apply for this position.
Responsibilities ·Planning and teaching weekly lectures ·Providing office hours for academic counseling of students ·Marking and grading assignments

NEW324Y1Y – CARIBBEAN THOUGHT II
NEW324Y1Y – A multi-disciplinary exploration of writing pertaining to culture and consciousness particularly Afro- and Indo-Caribbean thought: theoretical perspectives on the implications and consequences of slavery and indenture, the struggle for freedom from the legacy of the plantation and colonial dependence, responses to domination and exploitation, race, gender, religion and music.

NEW422Y1Y – Addresses ways in which performance can be a force for cultural resistance and social change. Examines Caribbean performances such as jonkonnu, theatre, dance hall and carnival, looking at how these forms engage questions of neo-colonialism, transculturation, gender, race and nation, community and identity and diasporic memory.

Class Schedule: Wednesdays 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Thursdays 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
