Sessional Lecturer Position, Fall/Winter Term 2005-2006

The South Asian Studies Program seeks a sessional lecturer from September 1, 2005 – April 30, 2006* to teach the following course:

**NEW114Y1Y – INTRODUCTION TO SOUTH ASIAN STUDIES**

NEW114Y1Y – An interdisciplinary introduction to South Asian Studies emphasizing inquiry and critical analysis, drawing attention to the specificities of individual nations as well as the factors (historical, political, economic and cultural) that define it as a region. Some attention will be paid to the South Asian diaspora.

Enrolment Estimate: 60 students

Estimated TA Support: None

Class Schedule: Thursdays 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Wilson Hall, room 524

Salary: $11,500 (Sessional Lecturer I) - $12,500 (Sessional Lecturer II)

*Please note that exams may be held in May and the position includes the completion of any course grading not finished by April 30.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a completed or nearly completed Ph.D. (or equivalent) with a scholarly background in areas related to the specific course. Teaching experience preferred.

Note: Graduate Students who are currently registered in a Ph.D. Program at the University of Toronto are members of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 and are not eligible to apply for this position.

·Planning and teaching weekly lectures

·Providing office hours for academic counseling of students

·Marking and grading assignments

Class Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wetmore Hall, room 51A

Salary: $11,500 (Sessional Lecturer I) - $12,500 (Sessional Lecturer II)

**NEW308H1F – SATYAJIT RAY: PARADIGMS OF VISION**

NEW308H1F – Examines the artistic vision of Satyajit Ray as a chronicler of Bengali culture and one of the greatest filmmakers of our time: his life and work; his films as expressions of his humane vision; cultural orientation and values; fictional compositions, visual and musical artistry; affinities and continuity with Rabindranath Tagore.
