JGI 454/JPGXXXS: Role of the Planner
Course Description: This course will introduce students to the contemporary history of urban and regional planning in the Toronto region, giving considerable attention to the social and cultural context in which this planning took place. Although the focus will be on the Toronto region, the course will also include discussion of certain aspects of the international history of planning that have particular local relevance – such as the origins of suburban neighbourhood design, modernism and its rejection, the ‘freeway revolt’, gentrification and others.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1 – *April 30, 2006
*Please note that exams may be held in May and the position includes the completion of any course grading not finished by April 30, 2006.
Salary: Sessional Lecturer I = $5,750 II = $6,250
Qualifications: Substantial experience in Planning for the City of Toronto, first hand knowledge of current planning issues in Ontario, advanced degree in Planning
Brief description of duties: Preparing course outline, syllabi and lectures; developing and administering grading, course assignments, tests and exams; holding regular office hours; selection and organization of guest lecturers; planning and organization of field trips.

PLA 1106F: Workshop in Planning Practice
Course Description: Students are expected to apply the insights, skills and techniques acquired during the first year of study to a number of case studies and assignments drawn from different planning contexts. As in a professional office, students will work in teams to obtain experience in cooperative action and in the management of time and effort. Projects will be selected in order to expose students to the complexity of real problems, and to suggest the range of policy and planning issues which students might encounter after graduation. Senior practitioners in the Toronto region work with students in the Workshop.

Class Schedule: Wednesdays – 9am to 12noon
