ITA232H5S Italian Literature Through the Ages II

Description: A survey of the shorter forms of Italian literature from the Baroque period to present times. Emphasis will be given to poems and « novelle », but the theoretical pieces and short plays of recognized literary significance will also be examined.

Class Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays 12 – 1 pm Sessional Dates of Appointment: January 2006 – April 2006

Estimate of Course Enrolment: 15 - 20

Salary: Sessional Lecturer I, the rate of pay for a full course (1.0 FCE) will be $11,500, inclusive of vacation pay, and for a half course (0.50 FCE) will be $5,750, inclusive of vacation pay.

Qualifications: Demonstrated research interest preferable with publication(s) in the subject; applicants who also have a PhD in Italian will be preferred. Applicants who have completed all the course work requirements for a PhD in Italian will also be considered. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, and mastery of Italian. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable.

Duties: preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and examination, marking of student work, submission of grades to university officials, reasonable student contact hours.

Description: Offered in English. An analysis of some of the most significant works of modern Italian film makers. Analysis and discussion will take place in English.

(Offered in English)

Description: This course deals with linguistic and cultural significance of the terminology that touches all aspects of organized crime. The prevailing use of certain terms that involve the organized crime lifestyle has an effect on how the North American and Italian societies view some criminals: the course focuses on an in-depth analysis of this effect. Italian, English and Sicilian terminology form the backbone of this course; where necessary, illustrations from other languages are used.

Class Schedule: Wednesdays 6 – 8 pm

ITA362H5S/363H5SS Italian Canadians and the Law

(Offered in English)

Description: The course will analyze the relation between the Italian Canadian community and the police force/judicial system from the beginning of the 20th century to present days as portrayed in the works of several Italian Canadian writers and film-makers such as Paul Tana, Tony Nardi and Bruno Ramirez. The issue will also be examined comparatively using writings by Pirandello, Sciascia, Comandè and Camilleri.
