Sessional Lectureship - September 1, 2005 to April 30, 2006
NMC236H1F/237H1S Introductory Modern Hebrew
These courses introduce students with no previous knowledge of Hebrew to the modern Hebrew language. Students will acquire basic useful vocabulary through an introduction to the fundamentals of Hebrew grammar and syntax. NMC237S follows NMC236F. Students will continue to study the fundamentals of Hebrew grammar and syntax, eventually mastering four verb patterns and two tenses. Emphasis is on the development of oral and writing skills.
Estimate of course enrolment: 15-20 (no TA hours)
Class schedule: MR2-4
Salary: Sessional Lecturer I $11,500
Qualifications: Fluency in Hebrew language and experience teaching in a university classroom setting are required. MA required. Ph.D. an asset.
Brief description of the duties: The Sessional Lecturer will prepare and provide formal instruction in Hebrew language at the introductory level during four class-hours per week. The successful applicant will also be responsible for developing and applying methods of evaluation administered over the academic year. This is a replacement Lectureship from September through May, and the Lecturer will coordinate the preparation of these courses with the professor who has academic oversight for them.

NMC340Y Intermediate Persian
This course involves reading, grammatical analysis, and translation of representative samples of contemporary and classical Persian prose and poetry of intermediate difficulty. The reading materials are selected from a wide range of sources in order to ensure balanced, yet comprehensive exposure to the different usage of the language. The course serves as preparation for courses on both classical and contemporary Persian literature.

NMC410Y Advanced Standard Arabic
Connected passages of text in Standard Arabic—drawn from classical and, predominantly, modern sources—will be studied in detail. This includes: a) reading aloud of written text material, and analysis of it in terms of grammar, syntax, and style; b) translation exercises (Arabic—English and vice versa); c) improving the ability to understand and speak Arabic by listening to tapes from various Arabic language courses; d) discussion of the cultural background of the texts’ contents; and e) written exercises.
