PHL 247F. Critical Reasoning. Th. 6:30-9:30 PM.

The area of informal logic-the logic of ordinary language, usually non-deductive. Criteria for the critical assessment of arguments as strong or merely persuasive. Different types of argument and techniques of refutation; their use and abuse.

Sept.-Dec. 2005

Estimate of Course Enrolment: 100-150

TA Support: (enrolment - 30) x 1.2 = TA hours

Salary: $5750

Qualifications: PhD in philosophy is preferred, but applicants who have completed all the course work requirements for a PhD in philosophy will also be considered. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, and mastery of subject area. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable.

Duties: preparation and delivery of course material, supervision of teaching assistants, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and examination, marking of student work, submission of grades to university officials, reasonable student contact hours.

A study of recent traditions of continental philosophy such as phenomenology, existentialism, hermeneutics, critical theory, structuralism and post-structuralism. Figures such as Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, the Frankfurt school, Lacan, Foucault, Deleuze and Derrida.

Can machines think and feel? Are human beings simply very complicated organic machines? These questions are discussed in the light of recent work on the simulation of intelligence and purposive behaviour.

PHL 341S. Practical Reason and Human Action.

Tuesday 6:30-9:30PM.

The course will cover various topics in action theory and the nature of practical reason, such as the nature of intentional action and intentional explanations, the relation between morality and practical reason, the distinction between theoretical and practical reasoning, and the relation between motivation and evaluation.
