FSL 105F Functional French I, sections L0101 and L0102

Description: The objective of this course, which serves as a starting point in our series of FSL courses, is to introduce our students to the phonetic system of the French language, to teach basic vocabulary and to develop awareness of the functions of language in different situations and contexts. A 4 hour course.

Class Schedule:

section L0101 (Mondays and Wednesdays 12-2)

section L0102 (Tuesdays and Thursdays 9-11)

September 2005 – December 2005

Estimate of Course Enrolment: 48

TA Support: extra 24 hours for the oral component

Salary: Sessional Lecturer I, the rate of pay for a full course (1.0 FCE) will be $11,500, inclusive of vacation pay, and for a half course (0.50 FCE) will be $5,750, inclusive of vacation pay. Qualifications: PhD in French is preferred, but applicants who have completed all the course work requirements for a PhD in French will also be considered. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, and mastery of French. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable.

Duties: preparation and delivery of course material, supervision of teaching assistant, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and examination, marking of student work, submission of grades to university officials, reasonable student contact hours.

FSL 205F Functional French II, sections L0101 and L0201

Description: This course is intended as a consolidation of French language skills. Grammar will be taught with a view to serving communicative functions and spontaneous speech will be our main focus. Written and spoken documents will be used as models for language study. A 3 hour course.

section L0201 (Tuesdays 11-1 and Thursdays 11-12)

FRE 180Y Introduction to French Studies sections L0101 and L0201

Description: The objectives of this course are twofold:

  1. A systematic study of grammar and composition through a variety of exercises designed to improve accuracy and logical structure in written French with emphasis on learning techniques such as use of dictionaries and reference texts, self-instruction and error analysis. Some time will be devoted to the use of French language software (grammar checker and multimedia presentation of French literature.) Composition writing will normally require the use of a computer. Use of e-mail for communication with the instructor is also recommended.
  2. A study of the social and cultural history of France as a guide to the understanding of its literature. Movements such as Humanism, Classicism, Romanticism and Existentialism will serve as a background to the study of a number of short texts of poetry drama and prose. Lectures, reading and audio-visual material will be in French. Weekly use of the language computer lab is recommended.

Description: Improvement of the four language skills (writing, reading, listening and speaking) for students specializing in French studies at the university.

FSL 305F Functional French V

Description: This course focuses on the expansion of students’ proficiency in French; it is practical and aims at fluency in conversations. Classes will consist of involvement in various situations (acting, group discussions, public presentations, family gatherings, etc) requiring communicative skills in order for the students to use the language. A 3 hour course.
