Subsequent Appointments (Unit 1)

Up one level
Answers to common questions about problems at work: overwork, hiring problems, grievances.

Questions in this FAQ:

What is a subsequent appointment?

A “subsequent appointment” is a guarantee of work in future academic sessions.

How many subsequent appointments am I entitled to?

A PhD candidate is entitled to 3 subsequent appointments (subsequent to their first, so 4 in total) and a 3rd year Masters candidate is entitled to 1 subsequent appointment.

Can I defer a subsequent appointment?

Yes. When your Department notifies you in April of your upcoming subsequent appointment you can request to have it deferred to a subsequent academic year. To our knowledge, such a request has never been refused.

Do I get the same number of hours in my subsequent appointments as I did in my initial appointment?

At least. The subsequent appointment guarantee is only a minimum guarantee. The Department is free to offer you more work than you had in your first appointment (adding up all work assignments in the Department in that session) but cannot offer less. Also, you are free to apply for and accept more work than your subsequent appointment guarantees you.

Does the location (i.e., department, campus) of my first appointment affect my subsequent appointments?

Yes. Subsequent appointments are the obligation of the initial hiring Department. So, since the Department that hires you is (with rare exceptions) the undergraduate Department, it is that Department which owes you further work. If in your first year you TA for two (or more) different Departments, the one for whom you taught the most owes you the subsequent appointment.

Does it matter what time of year I received my first appointment?

Yes. If your first appointment was in the Winter Session (September-April) your subsequent appointments must be in Winter too. If your first appointment was in the Summer Session (May-August), you will have subsequent appointments in the Summer.

Do Course Instructorships count as subsequent appointments?

Yes. However, just like with traditional TAships, the guarantee is only for the amount of work (number of hours) and not for the particular course.

Are students outside of the guaranteed funding cohort entitled to subsequent appointments?

Yes. Subsequent appointments are driven entirely by the requirements in the Collective Agreement and have no necessary relationship to the funding guarantee.

What happens after I use up all of my subsequent appointments?

You are eligible to apply for any and all jobs posted to CUPE 3902 Unit1. The Department must consider your application and use the hiring criteria in the Collective Agreement in making a decision as to who to hire for each specific job. The hiring criteria are now weighted more heavily towards TAs with experience who are further along in their programs. If you disagree with any hiring decision, contact the Union immediately.
