Up one levelWhen can I apply for advancement?
Once you have taught as a Sessional Lecturer at the UofT for 4 years within the past 6, and have taught, in total, at least 8 half-courses in one Department (you can count up to 1 full course as a Unit 1 course instructor), you are eligible to request advancement to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II.
How do I apply for advancement?
You should submit your letter of application for advancement, along with an up-to-date CV (even if the Department has one already) and a teaching dossier, by July 1 (at the latest September 1) of any given year - once you've met the basic qualifications (see above).
The Department will then strike a committee to review the applications, and a member of the committee will observe you in the classroom. Those candidates who demonstrate superior classroom teaching will be advanced. You will find out the results of the advancement application by December 31, and the decision is appealable.
What does a teaching dossier include?
It includes all syllabi and course curricula you have written, and anything else related to course design and planning that you have done, as well as teaching evaluations, including student evaluations, teaching awards, etc.
What's the advantage of being advanced to SL II?
Persons holding the rank of Sessional Lecturer II are preferred candidates for all positions in the Department for which they are qualified and for which they make application. In addition, Sessional Lecturer II’s are paid $13,550 per course as a minimum (SL I’s are paid $12,550). There is no limit on the number of courses you can teach as a sessional lecturer of either rank.
