FAQ's about advancement from the rank of Sessional Lecturer I to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II.

When can I apply for advancement to SL 2?

**NEW**: Early initiation of the SL2 advancement process is now possible during your final qualifying appointment (i.e. your 4th full course or 8th half course).

You may submit your written request for early consideration for advancement to SL 2 along with your CV and teaching dossier to the Chair of your prospective advancing Department by September 30 or January 31 of your final qualifying term/appointment.

So, if you began your 4th full-course (Y) in September 2009 or you will begin your eighth half-course (H) in January 2010 and this is your fourth year of teaching at UofT within the last 6 years (or within the last 7 years if your qualifying courses were taught in 2 or 3 Departments), you may submit your application for early consideration by January 31, 2010.

You will find out the results of the review by December 31 if you apply in September and by April 30 if you apply in January.

Do I have to teach all my qualifying courses for SL 2 in the same Department?

NO. Qualifying courses for SL 2 may now be accumulated in up to 3 different Departments, as long as at least half were taught in the advancing Department.

Also, you can count up to 1 full course as a Unit 1 course instructor towards your eligibility.

How do I apply for advancement to SL 2?

You should submit your letter of application for advancement, along with an up-to-date CV (even if the Department has one already) and a teaching dossier, to the Department Chair.

A teaching dossier includes your own syllabi, other materials relevant to the design and planning of course content, positive student evaluations, teaching awards, etc.

NOTE: Since "currency and mastery" of subject matter are key components of the advancement review, make sure that material submitted to advancement committees (course syllabi, supplemental material distributed to classes, etc.) contains references to current scholarship. Those who demonstrate BOTH currency and superior classroom teaching will be advanced.

The Department will strike a committee to review the applications and will advise you in writing of its composition. Within two weeks of this notification, you may advise the Chair in writing of any express reservations you may have with respect to the members appointed to the committee.

As part of the process, a member of the committee will observe you in the classroom, at your time of choice.

If the committee decides against advancing you, the decision is appealable: contact the Union for help.

What does a teaching dossier include?

A teaching dossier includes your own syllabi and course curricula, anything else related to course design and planning, student evaluations and other teaching evaluations, teaching awards, etc.

What's the advantage of being advanced to SL 2?

Persons holding the rank of Sessional Lecturer 2 are preferred candidates for all positions in the advancing Department for which they are qualified and for which they make application.

In addition, Sessional Lecturer 2’s are paid a minimum of $900 more per full course ($450 more per half-course) than SL 1's. SL 2's receive this higher rate of pay in Departments other than the advancing Department as well.

Hiring preference is restricted to within the advancing Department, unless you have also taught 8 half-courses in another Department, in which case you will have preference in that Department as well without having to go through another advancement review.

SL 2's also retain the right to file hiring grievances after a longer break in employment than SL 1's.

There is no limit on the number of courses you can teach as a Sessional Lecturer of any rank.

Who is eligible for the new rank of SL 3?

You must teach for 3 years as an SL 2 with an average teaching load of 2 Full Course Equivalents per year to meet the basic eligibility criteria for SL 3. The 6 full or 12 half qualifying courses may be accumulated in up to 3 different Departments, as long as you have taught at least three half courses per academic year in the advancing Department (although in this case the advancing Department is only obligated to guarantee one FCE per year to the SL 3).

Because of the unique nature of OISE contracts, OISE members should contact the Union about eligibility.

As for SL 2 advancement, you must submit a CV and teaching dossier with a written request for Advancement to the rank of SL 3 to the Chair of your prospective advancing Department. The SL 3 process does involve another advancement review similar to that for SL 2, but the classroom observation is optional (your choice).

As for SL 2, the Department strikes a committee to review applications, and those who demonstrate both currency and superior classroom teaching will be advanced. You will find out the results of the advancement application by December 31 if you apply in September and by April 30 if you apply in January, and the decision is appealable.

What are the entitlements for SL 3?

The new rank of SL 3 offers a job security guarantee of 2 full courses each year in the advancing Department, beginning in 2010-11. SL 3s are guaranteed a course load of 2 FCEs per year in the advancing Department, to be assigned by the Chair in consultation with the SL 3. The SL 3 can opt to defer the guarantee to a later date due to other commitments.

The SL 3 can also apply for additional UofT work, for which s/he enjoys hiring preference on the same basis as SL 2, i.e. in the advancing Department.

There is also a higher pay rate: a minimum of $700 more per full course ($350 more per half course) than the SL 2 rate in any Department the SL 3 is employed in. The new pay rate comes into effect on May 1, 2010 for those advanced to SL 3 at that time.

Additionally, SL 3's are entitled to a matched contribution of 6% (instead of 5% as for other SL's) in the Group RRSP.

Can Writing Instructors be advanced?

YES! Although there is no rank for Writing Instructors corresponding to SL 3, there is one corresponding to SL 2: the rank of Writing Instructor 2.

To be advanced to WI 2, you must be employed for 600 hours in the prospective Writing Centre and be so employed in 4 of the past 6 years (or in two Writing Centres for 300 hours in each and be so employed in 4 of the past 7 years).

You may initiate the process early, after 550 hours. Submit a CV and teaching dossier with a request for early initiation of advancement to the Director of the advancing Writing Centre.

WI 2 status entitles you to hiring preference in the advancing Writing Centre and a slightly higher hourly wage in all Centres. WI 2 is the highest rank available to Writing Instructors.
