Health Care Spending Account (HCSA)

If you are a registered student or post-doc with a teaching appointment of 50 hours or more, the University will provide $300 that you can use for any medical expenses, including additional dental expenses, vision care, and prescription drugs.

Eligible expenses are those that qualify as a medical expense tax credit under the Income Tax Act: a full list can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency website.

The HCSA can also be combined with the Graduate Students' Union Health Plan – in fact, you can use your HCSA benefit to pay the premium on your GSU Health Plan with a premium receipt from the GSU. But please note that there will be a delay in issuing GSU receipts this year, possibly into the New Year. This is the result of faulty enrolment lists received from the Administration. The errors are currently being rectified, and CUPE 3902 is supporting the GSU in their efforts to do this. We appeal to your patience, as the delay is not owing to any fault on the GSU's part or ours. Please check the GSU website (www.gsu.utoronto.ca) and this website for further updates.

Enrolment in the HCSA is automatic, if you have been offered an appointment of 50 hours or more: as soon as you appear on the UofT payroll for this year, you will get a card in the mail from Green Shield. Even if you have not yet received your card, you can make claims by using your Greenshield number, which is made up of the letters UOT and your personnel number (NOT your student number, but the number that appears on your pay stub).

The claim form is available here.

The HCSA also entitles you to $300 for a spouse and for each dependent child; however, you must enrol them yourself, after you get your own card. The form to enrol spouses and children is available here. The period of coverage for spouses and children for the current benefit year began on September 1, 2007.

Bring or send the completed enrolment form for spouses and children NOT to Greenshield, but to the UofT Benefits Office, at 215 Huron St, 8th floor, Toronto, M5S 1A2. (Claim forms and receipts go to Greenshield).

If you have questions about any of these benefits, stop by our office and pick up a copy of our pamphlet on new benefits, or call us at 416.593.7057.
