Advancement Information for Unit 3 members
The deadline for submitting applications for early initiation into SLII is Monday, February 1, 2010. Please note that you need only to submit a letter to the Chair of the prospective advancing Department at this time. Also, if you reached the qualifications threshold for advancement prior to this academic year, you may be eligible for early initiation, and should apply by Feb. 1st if you wish to be considered.
Sessional Lecturer 2 - Eligibility
To be eligible for SL 2 you must teach at the UofT for 4 years within
the past 6, and teach in total at least 8 half-courses (you can count
up to 1 full course as a Unit 1C.I.). Qualifying courses may be
accumulated in up to 3 different Departments, with at least 1/2 in the
advancing Department.
Sessional Lecturer 2 - Process
You must submit your written request for the initiation of the
advancement process to the Chair of the prospective advancing
department by September 30 or January 31 of your final qualifying
term/appointment. Note: you do not need to submit your
complete application package at this time.
Early initiation of the SL2 advancement process is now possible during your final qualifying appointment (i.e. your 4th full course or 8th half course). If you began your 4th full-course (Y) in September 2009 or you will begin your eighth half-course (H) in January 2010 and this is your fourth year of teaching at UofT within the last 6 years (or within the last 7 years if your qualifying courses were taught in 2 or 3 Departments), you may submit your application for early consideration by January 31, 2010. If you reached the qualifications threshold prior to this academic year, and you are considering applying for advancement, you should apply by the January 31 deadline.
The Department will strike a committee to review the applications,
and a committee member will observe you in the classroom at your time
of choice. You will submit your CV and teaching dossier to the
Committee. You will find out the results by December 31 if you
apply in September and by April 30 if you apply in January. The
decision is appealable.
Since “currency and mastery” of subject matter are key components
of the review, make sure that material submitted to advancement
committees (course syllabi, supplemental material distributed to
classes, etc.) contains references to current scholarship. A teaching
dossier includes your own syllabi, positive student evaluations,
teaching awards, etc. Those who demonstrate both currency and superior
classroom teaching will be advanced.
Sessional Lecturer 2 - Entitlements
Persons holding the rank of SL 2 are preferred candidates for all
positions in the advancing Department (and in any other Department in
which they have taught at least 8 half courses) for which they are
qualified and for which they make application. In addition, SL 2s are
paid $900 more per full course at minimum in any employing Department.
There is no limit on the number of courses you can teach as an SL of
any rank. SL 2s also retain the right to file hiring grievances after a
longer break in employment than SL 1s.
Sessional Lecturer 3 - Eligibility
You must teach for 3 years as an SL 2 with an average teaching load of
2 Full Course Equivalents per year. Because of the unique nature of
OISE contracts, OISE members should contact the Union about
eligibility. The 6 full or 12 half qualifying courses may be
accumulated in up to 3 different Departments, as long as you have
taught at least 3 half courses per academic year in the advancing
Department (although in this case the advancing Department is only
obligated to guarantee one FCE per year to the SL 3).
Sessional Lecturer 3 - Process
Submit a CV and teaching dossier with a written request for Advancement
to the rank of SL 3 to the Chair of your prospective advancing
Department. The SL 3 process does involve another advancement review
similar to that for SL 2, but the classroom observation is optional
(your choice). As for SL 2, the Department strikes a committee to
review applications, and those who demonstrate superior classroom
teaching will be advanced. You will find out the results by December 31
if you apply in September and by April 30 if you apply in January; the
decision is appealable.
Sessional Lecturer 3 - Entitlements
The new rank of SL 3 offers a job seccurity guarantee of 2 full courses
each year beginning in 2010-11. SL 3s are guaranteed a course load of 2
FCEs per year in the advancing Department, to be assigned by the Chair
in consultation with the SL 3. The SL 3 can opt to defer the guarantee
to a later date due to other commitments. The SL 3 can also apply for
additional UofT work, for which s/he enjoys hiring preference on
the same basis as SL 2, i.e. in the advancing Department. There is also
a higher pay rate: a minimum of $700 more per full course than the SL 2
rate in any Department the SL 3 is employed in. The new pay rate comes
into effect on May 1, 2010 for those advanced to SL 3 at that
time.
Writing Instructor 2
To be advanced to Writing Instructor 2, you must be employed for 600
hours in the prospective Writing Centre and be so employed in 4 of the
past 6 years (or in two Writing Centres for 300 hours in each and be so
employed in 4 of the past 7 years). You may initiate the process early,
after 550 hours. Submit a CV and teaching dossier with a request for
early initiation of advancement. WI 2 status entitles you to hiring
preference in the advancing Writing Centre and a slightly higher hourly
wage in all Centres. WI 2 is the highest rank available to Writing
Instructors.
